Meryl Streep Critiques Superhero Films and Reflects on 'Devil Wears Prada' Journey
Actress Meryl Streep discusses the impact of superhero films on modern cinema, expressing her preference for complex character portrayals. She also reflects on her role and salary negotiations for 'The Devil Wears Prada'. The sequel touches on themes like AI, as the film returns to theaters.
In a candid revelation during an interview with the Hits Radio Breakfast Show, renowned actress Meryl Streep shared her thoughts on the current state of filmmaking, as reported by Variety. She critiqued the prevailing trend of superhero storytelling, noting that this focus on archetypal heroes and villains results in a lack of depth in character development.
Streep articulated her concerns about the simplification of narratives, stating, "I think we tend to Marvel-ize the movies now. We got the villains, and we got the good guys, and it's so boring." She emphasized her interest in stories that feature characters with complex, flawed, or even villainous traits, as these make for more engaging plots.
Reflecting on her role as Miranda Priestly in the newly released sequel of 'The Devil Wears Prada,' Streep discussed her past negotiations for the original 2006 film casting, revealing how she initially turned down the offer but accepted it once her financial demands were met. As the sequel delves into AI-related themes, Streep commented on how her character, Priestly, perceives technology, juxtaposing Hathaway's encounters with ChatGPT in modern hiring scenarios.
