The Delhi Gymkhana Club is under pressure as it faces eviction after receiving three notices for unpaid ground rent totaling Rs 48 crore. The Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry issued an eviction order on May 22, sparking appeals from the club's general committee against disruptions to its operations.
Despite the looming eviction threat, the club's committee asserts a financial turnaround since taking charge in 2022 under a National Company Law Tribunal order. The club reported a projected profit of Rs 9.25 crore for 2023-24, a significant recovery from losses in previous years. The committee highlights its efforts in improving administration, tightening financial procedures, and updating membership records.
Club members argue for fair treatment, emphasizing the institution's role as Delhi's historical social and sporting hub. They label the eviction move as selective, stating the club's premises serve many for recreational and cultural activities. Calls for relocation alternatives and member protection continue as discussions with L&DO officials progress.
