Shaolin Scandal: Former Abbot Sentenced for Massive Embezzlement

In a shocking turn of events, Shi Yongxin, the former abbot of China's renowned Shaolin Temple, has been sentenced to 24 years in prison. He was fined 3.5 million yuan for charges related to embezzlement and bribery, according to state media reports on Friday.

The sentencing was delivered by a court in Henan province, revealing how Shi misused his influential role at the historic temple, famed as the cradle of kung fu, to orchestrate financial transgressions totalling approximately 300 million yuan over nearly three decades.

Shi, originally named Liu Yingcheng, served as the temple's abbot from 1999, following a long tenure since 1987. He accepted all charges without appeal. His monastic certificate has been revoked, marking a significant downfall for the monk once at the helm of the esteemed institution.
