Criticism Arises Over Thiruvalluvar's Saffron Image at Lok Bhavan Tribute

TVK and DMK leaders express disapproval over the portrayal of Tamil poet Thiruvalluvar in saffron clothing at Lok Bhavan. Criticism focuses on this depiction as a political act that contradicts Thiruvalluvar’s universal teachings. Governor's tribute and state calendar changes also face scrutiny from opposition parties.

The ruling TVK and opposition DMK have jointly condemned the depiction of the revered Tamil poet-philosopher Thiruvalluvar in saffron attire, as seen during a recent tribute at Lok Bhavan. Traditionally, Thiruvalluvar is portrayed in white, a symbol of his universal appeal beyond religious confines.

The controversy erupted when Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar paid respects to a saffron-clad portrait of Thiruvalluvar on 'Vaikasi Anusham,' sparking accusations of politicizing the poet’s image. Tamil Nadu's Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Arunraaj, vocalized his disapproval, asserting that such representation diminishes the philosopher's global vision.

DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin criticized both the image and the perceived 'inaction' of the current government on these matters. He highlighted inconsistencies in the celebration’s timing as a deviation from state norms, hinting at political motivations behind the move.

Udhayanidhi recalled previous resistance against similar portrayals under former DMK governance, emphasizing the need to protect the cultural dignity of Tamil Nadu.
