DGMS Engages Coal Operators in Mine Safety as Sector Diversifies
The Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS) is actively consulting with captive and commercial coal block operators to ensure adherence to safety norms as more mines enter production. Meanwhile, Coal India is diversifying into non-coal sectors like graphite and lithium to capitalize on the growing battery value chain.
The Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS) is ramping up consultations with captive and commercial coal block operators to enforce adherence to safety regulations as the industry expands, an official announced on Sunday.
With the increase in the number of commercial mines, ensuring strict compliance with safety norms becomes paramount, DGMS Director General Prabhat Kumar stated at the Mines Safety Award 2024 event. In the last nine auction rounds, the Ministry of Coal has auctioned 107 blocks, with 11 commercial coal blocks now operational.
Meanwhile, Coal India, aiming to diversify into the non-coal sector, plans to participate in more auctions for critical minerals such as lithium. Despite recent setbacks, the company has secured a graphite block in Madhya Pradesh. Coal India's annual report highlights its new focus on battery materials like lithium, nickel, cobalt, and graphite to adapt to the evolving energy landscape and boost long-term resilience and competitiveness.
