The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced on Monday that monsoon activity in Himachal Pradesh is set to intensify in both intensity and distribution over the coming days. According to the IMD, the state has already experienced isolated spells of heavy rainfall and light to moderate showers in numerous regions over the last 24 hours.

'Monsoon activity is likely to increase in intensity and distribution over the next 4-5 days, with widespread moderate precipitation, occasionally accompanied by thunderstorms or lightning. Peak intensity is expected on July 31 and August 1,' the IMD said in a press release. The report also indicated that heavy rainfall is projected at one or two locations in the districts of Chamba, Kangra, Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Mandi, Kullu, Solan, Shimla, and Sirmaur from July 29 to August 3.

Expectations for heavy to very heavy rainfall at one or two spots in the districts of Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra, Mandi, Shimla, and Sirmaur on July 31 and August 1 have also been emphasized. During this period, the average minimum and maximum temperatures are predicted to stay normal.

The IMD has issued warnings for possible landslides and flash floods in sensitive areas of the Kullu, Solan, Sirmaur, Shimla, and Kinnaur districts. Anticipated traffic disruptions in major cities caused by waterlogging may lead to longer travel times.

Mechanisms for mechanical support for horticultural crops and staking for vegetables have been advised by the IMD. The weather agency also highlighted potential damage to vulnerable structures and minor damage to kutcha houses, walls, and huts. Possible localized landslides, mudslides, landslips, mud slips, landsinks, and mudsinks have been noted.

Reductions in visibility owing to heavy rainfall and fog are likely, according to the IMD. Authorities have been advised to make provisions for draining excess water from crop fields to prevent water stagnation.
