The Enforcement Directorate (ED) launched fresh raids on Friday at multiple locations across West Bengal as part of its ongoing investigation into the Public Distribution System (PDS) ration scam. The searches were conducted in Chakraberia, Kolkata, and six other districts including Basanti, Jaynagar, and Kalyani.
These latest raids follow the arrest of former food and civil supplies minister Jyotipriya Mallick, who has been in custody since October 2023. Mallick was implicated in the alleged ration scam, and in July, ED also raided the home of a rice mill owner believed to be a close aide of Mallick.
In April, the ED seized 48 immovable properties worth over Rs 150 crore tied to Mallick and other suspects in the scam. These assets, including two hotels and residential houses, were believed to be acquired through proceeds of the crime. The agency's investigation, rooted in multiple FIRs, revealed unauthorized possession and bogus procurement practices within the PDS.
