Energy officials from nine EU member states in the Mediterranean have announced an ambitious plan to transform the region into a renewable energy hub. They are exploring ways to facilitate cross-border projects and have called for close collaboration with the European Commission to undertake necessary assessments.
Representatives from the MED9 group, comprising Croatia, Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Slovenia, and Spain, articulated their intentions to assess specific opportunities and challenges aimed at converting the area into a green energy hub. This initiative was discussed at a recent meeting held in Larnaca, Cyprus.
Additionally, Cyprus and Greece revealed plans to collaborate on a subsea electricity cable project linking continental Europe to Cyprus. This venture aims to mitigate the energy isolation of Cyprus, which currently relies heavily on carbon-intensive heavy fuel oil for electricity generation.
