Shell Contained Oil Leak in Singapore, Ensures No Operational Impact
Shell reported an oil leak from a pipeline at its Singapore facility, which released 30-40 metric tonnes of slop into the sea. The leak has been contained with no impact on operations, and cleanup efforts are underway. Shell's Singapore refinery sale is set to finalize by 2024.
Shell has confirmed that an oil leak over the weekend from a pipeline at its Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Singapore on Bukom island has not affected operations. The company swiftly contained the leak, which discharged approximately 30-40 metric tonnes of oil and water slop into the sea.
The stoppage of the leak and ongoing cleanup efforts are underway with support from relevant authorities. A Shell spokesperson assured that Bukom's operations and supply remain unaffected. This incident follows the scheduled maintenance shutdown of one of Bukom's crude distillation units and other facilities in August.
In a strategic move, Shell sold its Singapore refinery and petrochemical plants to a joint venture of Indonesia's Chandra Asri and Glencore, with completion anticipated by 2024. Earlier disruptions in the region included beach closures on Sentosa island due to oil spills from a nearby shipping terminal.
