Jet Fuel Tanker Ablaze After Collision with Cargo Ship Near England
A tanker carrying jet fuel collided with a container ship off northeast England, igniting both vessels and causing multiple explosions. All crew from the tanker were safely evacuated, while one member from the cargo ship is missing. Environmental damage risks remain due to the fuel spill.
A dramatic maritime incident occurred off the northeast coast of England on Monday when a tanker, loaded with jet fuel for the U.S. military, collided with a container ship. Both vessels caught fire and exploded, leading their crews to abandon ship.
The tanker, named Stena Immaculate and operated by Crowley, can carry massive quantities of jet fuel and was stationed near Hull when it was hit. The collision with the Portuguese-flagged Solong cargo ship caused a significant breach, leading to a fuel spill into the sea, raising concerns about environmental damage.
Authorities confirmed that 36 crew members were safely ashore, although one from the cargo ship remains missing. The factor of environmental risk was underscored by Greenpeace, who noted potential impact on seabird colonies residing along Yorkshire's protected coasts. While no malicious activity was suspected, the incident prompted a comprehensive search and rescue mission, further complicating shipping traffic in the busy waterway.
