The detection of Aflatoxin, a toxic substance, in rice consignments from India to the European Union has raised some concerns. However, the government assures compliance with the standards set by importing countries, as informed to Parliament recently.
Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada noted that, despite these detections, there have been no reports from exports coming out of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh in the last five years. He added that the EU's maximum residue levels for 'Aflatoxin B1' in rice have remained unchanged.
This development comes as India's rice exports to the EU increased by 111% from 2019 to 2023; non-Basmati rice exports have risen by 500% in the same period, outperforming ASEAN countries. The government continues proactive discussions and negotiations to comply with international requirements while working towards expanding trade agreements.
