The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has introduced the 'Model Rules for Felling of Trees in Agricultural Lands' to assist States and Union Territories in simplifying regulatory frameworks and advancing agroforestry. The initiative highlights agroforestry as a means to enhance rural livelihoods, improve soil health, and contribute to climate resilience.
According to the ministry, the rules are designed to encourage participation and provide business ease in tree-based farming systems. The approach aims at promoting domestic timber production by closing the demand-supply gap and supporting wood-based industries. The State Level Committee under the Wood-Based Industries Guidelines will implement these rules to enhance timber production from farmlands.
Applicants must register plantations on the developing National Timber Management System portal, submitting land data and geotagged photos. Permits for tree felling on agricultural lands will be issued post site inspections. The Ministry urges States and UTs to consider adopting these rules to incentivize integrating trees into farming systems effectively.
