The Odisha government has announced a significant initiative to assist women from poor families with marriage expenses. Named the 'Mukhyamantri Kanya Bibaha Yojana,' the scheme aims to provide Rs 51,000 to ensure that weddings are conducted with respect, legality, and cultural significance.

Detailed guidelines indicate that the initiative is available to permanent Odisha residents, targeting brides aged 18-35 and grooms aged 21-35. This financial assistance prioritizes first-time marriages but inclusively covers widow remarriages. Notably, one woman per family, who hasn't received similar grants, can apply. Priority is extended to widows, individuals with disabilities, and socio-economically vulnerable communities.

Scheduled to operate between 2025 and 2030, the program mandates physical applications at designated district bodies. It further ensures the upholding of cultural practices, dignity, and legal norms in ceremonies. Comprising a direct bank transfer of Rs 35,000, a wedding gift kit, and funding for community events, the scheme reinforces Odisha's commitment to supporting its marginalized communities.
