Amid escalating tensions in Malkangiri district, the Odisha government has taken the significant step of suspending internet and social media services for 24 hours. This move follows violent clashes between two villages, triggered by the discovery of a headless body in the area.
According to a notification from the Home Department, the suspension, effective from 6:00 pm on December 8, aims to control the rapid spread of inflammatory messages via platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, and X. Authorities feared these messages were fueling unrest, posing a serious threat to public safety and order.
The internet blackout, enacted under Section 20 of the Telecommunications Act, 2023, reflects the government's commitment to restoring peace. Essential communication lines for key administrative and police offices remain operational, while police forces are actively working to stabilize the situation.
