Coal India Unveils Ambitious 10-Year Plan to Eradicate Imports
Coal India Ltd plans a 10-year roadmap to eliminate coal imports by boosting domestic production, enhancing quality, and reducing logistics costs. The plan includes a forensic audit of imports and sector-specific policies, aiming to support energy security and align with green transition goals under the national coal gasification mission.
In an ambitious move, Coal India Ltd has announced a comprehensive decadal plan to significantly reduce coal imports, currently at 243 million tonnes, by augmenting domestic production and improving coal quality.
This strategic roadmap is expected to include a detailed forensic audit of the current import practices, supported by specific policies and gradual shift strategies aimed at boosting local supply. A 'National Washery & Logistics Grid' will be established to optimize coal washing and transportation, addressing key supply chain challenges.
As the primary entity responsible for more than 80% of India's domestic coal production, Coal India aims to raise its output to one billion tonnes by 2028-29, thereby decreasing import dependence, enhancing energy security, and supporting national green transition objectives.
