In the wake of Assam's passage of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill, discussions are heating up in neighboring Meghalaya, where tribal customs and traditions take precedence. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has urged a thorough understanding of the UCC's provisions before coming to any conclusion on the matter.

Conrad Sangma expressed his initial opposition to the UCC due to concerns over its potential impact on tribal laws and Meghalaya's matrilineal system. However, after reviewing similar bills from Uttarakhand and Assam, which exclude tribal laws, Sangma feels somewhat reassured but remains cautious.

The Chief Minister has pointed out that safeguarding Meghalaya's tribal identity and customary laws continues to be a priority. As such, the state's government is meticulously examining the UCC's details, ensuring that no national legislation undermines the state's unique cultural and social frameworks.
