The Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted extensive search operations in Champhai, Mizoram, targeting an elaborate smuggling syndicate trafficking illegal Burmese dry areca nuts into India. The operations, carried out in coordination with Mizoram Police, covered nine crucial locations along the Mizoram-Myanmar border.
Authorities described the operation as a major offensive against a 'highly organized' cross-border network known for smuggling large quantities of Burmese supari into the country. The raids were primarily focused on the homes and business establishments of prominent figures involved in the smuggling ring, according to officials informed of the operation.
Investigations revealed the smugglers brought in consignments from Myanmar via the Tiu River, storing them in local warehouses. These consignments were then misrepresented as legitimate local transactions using fraudulent e-way bills and forged documents, facilitating illegal financial gains worth hundreds of crores. Furthermore, the accused capitalized on their tribal status to act as 'front claimants' at Customs, employing outdated import documents to secure the release of seized goods.
