In a strategic move to bolster India's defence capabilities, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh announced the release of the Delegation of Financial Powers to Defence Services (DFPDS-2026). This new framework, designed for revenue-related procurement exceeding Rs 1.25 lakh crore annually, signifies a pivotal shift towards enhanced self-reliance and operational readiness.

The initiative empowers field commanders with greater financial autonomy, enabling expedited decision-making and reducing the reliance on foreign equipment manufacturers. By promoting domestic research and development, the reforms seek to strengthen indigenous capabilities. "This major initiative will empower field commanders, leading to faster decisions and improved operational preparedness," noted the Defence Minister.

Economically, the policy is poised to drive domestic self-reliance by integrating private startups and MSMEs into the defence sector. Doubling the financial powers for infrastructure projects, the reforms ensure swifter development and successful completion. The revised delegation also places a strong emphasis on indigenization, minimizing dependence on foreign Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs).

The restructuring also introduces provisions for joint service procurement and decentralized acquisition, facilitating rapid procurement to meet urgent operational needs. The revised document, aligned with the increased budgetary allocation, is envisioned to rejuvenate defence procurement processes, ensuring timely availability of critical resources. Key defence and government officials, including Chief of Defence Staff General NS Raja Subramani, attended the significant announcement, marking a new era for India's defence sector.
