Bihar: Ganga water rise triggers erosion in Danapur; administration steps up relief measures

Rising water levels in the Ganga have triggered erosion in several parts of Danapur, posing risks to life, property and connectivity. Authorities are working to maintain ferry services, arrange boats and ration supplies for cut-off villages, while coordinating with the Water Resources Department to contain the erosion.

Bihar Minister Ram Kripal Yadav on Monday said rising water levels in the Ganga have affected several areas of Danapur, with erosion reported at multiple locations and increasing the risk to lives and property. Yadav, who toured the affected areas along with officials and party workers, said the administration has been directed to ensure that residents in flood-affected and cut-off areas do not face shortages of essential supplies or difficulties in accessing safe locations.

"Floodwaters have entered several areas, including parts of Bihar. Today, I toured the affected areas alongside officials and party workers. Erosion is occurring at multiple locations, increasing the risk of loss of life and property," Yadav said. He said he had directed officials to make arrangements for boats in areas where road connectivity has been affected by the rising water levels. He also called for ration supplies to be provided to villages that have become completely cut off due to flooding.

"I have asked for arrangements to be made, such as providing boats and, in accordance with established norms, supplying rations to villages that have become completely cut off," the minister said. Yadav also said shelters have been established at some locations and instructed officials to ensure that these facilities are adequately prepared according to the requirements of flood-affected residents.

"Shelters are set up in some locations. I have instructed that preparations be made at these sites according to requirements so that the flood-affected people face no difficulties," he said. The minister further highlighted the role of government boat services in providing connectivity and assistance to people living in vulnerable areas during periods of high water levels. He said government boat services have been operational in the region for the past several years through the joint efforts of the Centre and the state government.

Meanwhile, Danapur SDO Anirudh Pandey said the recent rise in the Ganga's water level has resulted in erosion in the area. He said the administration was working to maintain basic amenities, including ferry services, while coordinating with the Water Resources Department to address the erosion. The flooding and erosion come as water levels in the Ganga continue to put pressure on low-lying areas along the river. Authorities are monitoring vulnerable stretches and taking measures to maintain connectivity and provide essential services to residents.

With erosion posing a particular threat to riverbank settlements, officials are also focusing on reducing the possibility of further damage to homes and other property. The administration is coordinating with relevant departments to assess vulnerable locations and take necessary measures. The situation remains under close watch as authorities work to ensure the availability of boats, food supplies and shelter for people affected by the rising water levels. (ANI)
