The South African Police Services (SAPS) has refuted social media claims that several Cape Town police stations will shut their doors as a result of the Coronavirus.

“The Western Cape wishes to refute social media reports doing rounds about the closure of a number of Cape Town police stations as a result of an outbreak of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) as fake news. The police stations include among others Delft, Mfuleni, Kuilsriver, and Khayelitsha,” said Western Cape police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa on Tuesday.

In a statement, the management of the SAPS in the province said they view the social media posts as mischievous.

These posts said management, are meant to sow unnecessary panic and confusion.

Meanwhile, all 151 police stations within the province remain operational.

“Social media users are henceforth warned against posting untruths and advised to verify the information before disseminating,” said police.

Meanwhile, Health Minister, Dr. Zweli Mkhize, on Monday said the government will intensify testing for the Coronavirus in the country in an effort to contain and limit its spread across the country.
