Foot-and-Mouth Disease Hits China's Cattle Herds

China has detected outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease in cattle herds in Gansu and Xinjiang. The SAT1 serotype, new to China, affects 219 animals. Local governments have initiated culling and disinfecting, but current vaccines do not cover this strain, prompting concern among industry analysts.

Chinese authorities have identified outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease in cattle herds located in Gansu province and the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. The disease, diagnosed as serotype SAT1, was found in 219 cattle this past Saturday.

In response, local authorities in both Xinjiang and Gansu undertook prompt measures such as culling the affected animals and executing comprehensive disinfection protocols.

Industry analysts note this is the first incidence of the SAT1 strain in China, highlighting a significant gap in protection, as current domestic vaccines are ineffective against this particular serotype.
