A new Ebola outbreak has claimed the lives of 80 individuals in the Democratic Republic of Congo's eastern Ituri province, according to the health ministry. Health Minister Samuel Roger Kamba Mulamba confirmed eight cases of the Bundibugyo strain in Rwampara, Mongwalu, and Bunia.

Currently, there are 246 suspected cases. The suspected index case involved a nurse who displayed symptoms including fever and severe weakness. The government swiftly activated its public health emergency operations center and bolstered surveillance, while deploying response teams.

Africa's top public health agency noted increased risk due to urban contexts and intense population movement in mining areas. Regional coordination with neighboring countries is underway to manage this emerging crisis.
