Race Against Time: Experimental Antiviral Deployed for Hantavirus Battle in Europe
Europe is receiving its first doses of an experimental antiviral for hantavirus as part of efforts to combat an outbreak linked to a cruise ship. The European Medicines Agency has identified favipiravir as a potential treatment, prompting Fujifilm Pharmaceuticals to donate 1,400 tablets to France, Spain, and the Netherlands.
Europe is stepping up its fight against the hantavirus outbreak with the deployment of experimental antiviral drugs. On Thursday, the European Commission announced that the first doses are en route to France, Spain, and the Netherlands to test favipiravir's efficacy. The absence of a specific treatment for hantavirus has led the European Medicines Agency to identify favipiravir as the most promising candidate under clinical trial or compassionate use protocols.
Fujifilm Pharmaceuticals, based in Japan, has donated 1,400 tablets of favipiravir following requests from France, Spain, and the Netherlands. As a precautionary measure, the European Union is initiating emergency procurement procedures to obtain additional supplies in anticipation of further cases.
The current outbreak has been concentrated on a cruise ship, with 13 confirmed cases and three fatalities recorded. The virus, transmitted by rodents, can lead to severe illness, with global case estimates reaching up to 100,000 annually. Despite its potential deadliness, hantavirus is not easily transmissible between humans.
