Kenya’s Nairobi to get AfDB-funded kidney centre worth $36m soon

Construction of a kidney centre at Kenya’s Kenyatta National Hospital at the capital city, Nairobi is set to commence soon. Principal Secretary at the Ministry of Health PS Susan Mochache opined Sh200 million is available for initial construction.
The tendering process has been concluded for the upcoming kidney centre worth USD 36 million. The tendering process is awaiting a no-objection from African Development Bank (AfDB) and work will commence immediately, according to Mochache. The project is jointly funded by the government of Kenya and AfDB.
The project is part of a network of Centre’s of excellence in non-communicable disease (NCD) across East Africa designed. It is also approved by AfDB as a multinational project covering the East African states but with each country carrying out a specific component. Other components on the pipeline, supported by the institution in the region include the East Africa Biomedical Engineering Institute in Rwanda, the East Africa Oncology Institute in Uganda and the East Africa Heart Institute in Tanzania, as reported by Construction Review Online.
The project will comprise a five-storey regional medical school and hospital for kidney-related ailments. It will reportedly comprise of 25 wards, laboratories, surgical theatres, high dependency units, consultation rooms and parking yards.
The project will build Kenya’s need to manage a kidney health crisis and promote medical tourism from neighbouring countries. Dialysis is the single largest claim made to the fund, according to the National Hospital Insurance Fund, The Star noted.
