Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has termed the recent Lok Sabha elections as a 'controlled election.' Speaking at Georgetown University, Gandhi alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) manipulated the electoral process to gain an unfair advantage. He claimed that in a fair contest, the BJP would not have secured close to 240 seats.
Gandhi further pointed out that the caste system has become a 'big and fundamental question' in India, and the election campaign was structured to allow Prime Minister Narendra Modi to dominate nationwide. Gandhi criticized the Election Commission, accusing it of acting in favor of the BJP.
The Congress leader also addressed the issue of institutional capture. He argued that the Congress party had been highlighting the compromised state of institutions, including the educational system and media, controlled by entities like the RSS. Gandhi noted that public awareness grew when they began emphasizing the importance of the Constitution, which resonated profoundly with disenfranchised and oppressed communities.
