Tel Aviv, Israel - The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced on Thursday that an airstrike successfully eliminated Hussam Shawan, the head of Hamas's internal security apparatus, in southern Gaza. Shawan was implicated in the group's brutal internal security operations, involving violent interrogations and human rights violations, the IDF confirmed.
The military operation occurred in the Khan Yunis humanitarian zone, where Shawan had been concealing himself. The IDF employed aerial surveillance and precision munitions to minimize civilian casualties while targeting Shawan, who was a key player in creating intelligence strategies against Israeli forces in the Gaza Strip.
Hamas, as per IDF claims, consistently violates international law by using civilians as shields for their terrorist acts. The group had previously killed 1,200 individuals and taken hostages, including at least 252 Israelis, during its attacks on Israeli communities near the Gaza border on October 7. Hostage takings and human rights violations continue amid long-standing tensions.
