A high-level committee in Nepal, tasked with investigating last year's Gen-Z protests, has exposed significant security lapses in its comprehensive report. The committee, led by Bigyanraj Sharma, identified irregularities in barrier placements around the federal parliament at the start of the demonstrations, which turned deadly between September 8 and 9.
The Gen-Z protests, which demanded government accountability and the lifting of a social media ban, escalated to violence near the federal parliament. Security forces reportedly used water cannons, tear gas, and live ammunition against protesters, resulting in 77 deaths. A breach of the parliament gates by protesters led to shootings from within the building.
The unrest also forced the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, succeeding him with interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki. The commission interviewed over 200 individuals to compile the report, which was handed over to Karki. The report estimates total physical and financial damages at NPR 84.45 billion, highlighting profound impacts on public and private sectors.
