Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) Chairman DK Sunil announced that American aerospace giant General Electric (GE) has committed to supplying 20 F404 engines for HAL's LCA Tejas Mark 1A fighter jets by the latter half of 2026. This commitment is crucial as HAL expects to receive a sixth engine for the project by the month's end, addressing earlier delays in engine deliveries.

Sunil, in an interview with ANI, highlighted the readiness for six aircraft installations by the end of the current month, signaling progress despite the setbacks. GE's assurance, while considered a 'pessimistic number' by Sunil, is perceived as a potential catalyst for the project. HAL currently has five engines in stock, with the sixth ready for collection, underpinning the resumption of the Tejas Mk1A program progress.

The delay in engine supply has placed a burden on HAL, prompting it to levy contractual penalties on GE for failing to meet delivery schedules. HAL aims to adhere to the contract terms, enforcing liquidated damages due to the setbacks in delivering F-404 engines. The Indian Air Force, having ordered 180 aircraft, is set to conduct a program review in May, assessing progress before proceeding with aircraft acceptance.
