International Effort Rallies to Rescue Trapped Lao Cave Explorers
A multinational team has gathered in central Laos to rescue seven people trapped in a cave after heavy rain blocked their exit. Specialist divers from countries including Thailand, France, and Australia have joined forces in a challenging operation to save the trapped individuals, who were prospecting for gold.
An international team, featuring specialist divers from Thailand, France, Indonesia, Japan, and Australia, is en route to central Laos to assist in rescuing seven people trapped in a cave, according to a Thai volunteer group.
The incident occurred after heavy rains caused a landslide last week, blocking the Lao nationals—who were in Xaisomboun province to search for gold—from leaving the cave. Concerns for the health of the trapped individuals are rising as they await evacuation.
Rescuers face considerable challenges, including navigating narrow, water-filled passages hundreds of meters long. Footage captured by a Thai volunteer showed the trapped individuals on a cave ledge, awaiting rescue and expressing relief upon hearing the reinforcements' promises of food and efforts to siphon off the floodwater.
