Honoring the Heroes: UN Peacekeepers' Day Celebrated Globally
On the International Day of UN Peacekeepers, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar honored the crucial role of peacekeepers worldwide. The day, themed 'Invest in Peace,' emphasizes the need for robust support for peacekeepers operating in challenging zones, highlighting past sacrifices and ongoing contributions to global peace and security.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar paid tribute to United Nations peacekeepers on the International Day of UN Peacekeepers, underscoring their pivotal role in preserving global peace and security. In a statement on social media platform X, Jaishankar acknowledged the invaluable contributions of those serving in UN Peacekeeping missions, particularly in challenging environments.
"We honor the brave women and men committed to UN Peacekeeping missions worldwide on this International Day. Their unwavering dedication to maintaining peace and security has significantly impacted some of the world's most difficult regions," the minister wrote. The day serves to recognize the service and sacrifice of peacekeepers working in conflict and post-conflict zones under UN mandates.
For nearly 80 years, UN peacekeepers have facilitated meaningful change in communities across countries such as Liberia, Namibia, Cambodia, Sierra Leone, and Timor-Leste, often preventing conflict and laying the foundation for lasting peace. The theme for this year, "Invest in Peace," calls for a reinforced commitment to ensuring that peacekeeping personnel are sufficiently equipped and funded to carry out their duties effectively. This year, with over 51,000 personnel involved in 11 UN missions, the challenges are increasingly complex due to evolving global tensions, making peacekeeping an indispensable tool for building stability.
The occasion also stands as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by peacekeepers, commemorating the nearly 4,500 who have died in service, including 59 in 2025 alone. India saw Major Abhilasha Barak receive the 2025 Military Gender Advocate of the Year award as a testament to her exceptional leadership in promoting gender-responsive peacekeeping. Major Barak, the first woman combat helicopter pilot in the Indian Army, serves with the UN Interim Force in Lebanon.
