Jharkhand Minister Alamgir Alam, currently incarcerated on money laundering charges, has stepped down from his position in the state cabinet as well as from his role as leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP), according to official sources on Tuesday.

In a letter sent from Birsa Munda Central Jail in Ranchi, Alam tendered his resignation to Chief Minister Champai Soren, affirming his departure from the cabinet. In another letter addressed to AICC chief Mallikarjun Kharge, Alam expressed his gratitude toward the party leadership for the opportunity to serve as the CLP leader, stating, "I hereby submit my resignation from the post of leader of Congress Legislature Party, Jharkhand. I shall remain grateful to the party leadership for providing me an opportunity to work and serve as CLP leader."

The Enforcement Directorate arrested Alam on May 15 in connection with a money laundering case, just days after Rs 32 crore in cash was discovered at premises linked to his associate. The opposition BJP in Jharkhand had called for Alam's removal from the cabinet last week, following which Chief Minister Soren took charge of all four portfolios held by the 70-year-old MLA from Pakur, including Parliamentary Affairs, Rural Development, Rural Works, and Panchayati Raj.
