Five people, including a man and his two sons, lost their lives due to suspected inhalation of poisonous gas inside a well in Chhattisgarh's Janjgir-Champa district, authorities reported.
Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai conveyed his condolences over the tragedy that took place in Kikirda village, within the Birra police jurisdiction.
Officials confirmed that the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) has been deployed to retrieve the bodies from the well. Preliminary findings reveal that the deceased include Ramchandra Jaiswal (60), Ramesh Patel (50), his sons Rajendra Patel (20) and Jitendra Patel (25), as well as Tikeshwar Chandra (25), stated Inspector General of Police (Bilaspur Range) Sanjeev Shukla.
Initial reports suggest Jaiswal had entered the well to recover a fallen wooden strip and fainted. Following his wife’s cries for help, three members from the neighboring Patel family attempted rescue but also succumbed. Chandra's subsequent attempt ended similarly, leading locals to alert the police. The deep “ring” well appears to contain water at the bottom, and SDRF efforts to retrieve the bodies are ongoing, another official noted. While poisonous gas inhalation is the suspected cause, a forensic team is investigating further.
In a social media post in Hindi, Chief Minister Sai expressed sorrow over the incident, offering prayers for the departed souls and strength for the bereaved families, underlining the enormity of the loss.
