Italy Reappoints Ambassador to Syria, Revitalizing Diplomatic Relations
Italy has decided to send an ambassador to Syria, marking the first G7 country to resume its diplomatic mission there since the civil war began in 2012. Stefano Ravagnan will serve as the new ambassador, highlighting Italy's appeal for a more proactive EU role in the region's humanitarian crisis.
Italy has announced the appointment of an ambassador to Syria as part of an effort to bring renewed focus to the beleaguered country, according to the Italian Foreign Minister on Friday. This move makes Italy the first G7 nation to reestablish its diplomatic mission in Damascus since civil war broke out.
The Italian embassy suspended operations and recalled its staff from Damascus in 2012 in response to what it described as the Syrian government's 'unacceptable violence' against its citizens. The conflict has since claimed hundreds of thousands of lives and displaced millions. Currently, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, with the backing of Iran and Russia, controls most of the nation.
Stefano Ravagnan, who serves as the foreign ministry's special envoy for Syria, has been named as the new ambassador. His appointment comes amid calls by Italy and seven other EU nations for a stronger EU involvement in addressing Syria's ongoing humanitarian crisis. The European Union's foreign policy chief Josep Borrell has been tasked with exploring further actions.
