Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on official visits to Poland and Ukraine from August 21-23, confirmed the Ministry of External Affairs on Monday. This marks the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Poland in 45 years. The visit coincides with the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between New Delhi and Warsaw set for 2024.
MEA Secretary (West) Tanmaya Lal highlighted the significance of this visit. “PM Modi’s visit on August 21-22 at the invitation of Polish PM Donald Tusk is historic. This comes as we commemorate 70 years of diplomatic relations,” Lal stated. “The visit will provide an opportunity for leaders to review and enhance bilateral relations across various sectors and discuss regional and global issues,” he added.
Lal acknowledged Poland’s past support, particularly during the 2022 Ukraine evacuation. “Poland assisted in evacuating over 4,000 Indian students from Ukraine during Operation Ganga. We also share a deep bond from World War II when over 6,000 Polish refugees were sheltered in India.” PM Modi will meet Poland’s President and other leaders and will receive a ceremonial welcome in Warsaw. He will also interact with the Indian community and business leaders.
This landmark visit includes a subsequent trip to Ukraine on President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s invitation. The engagements in Kyiv will span bilateral ties, trade, investments, education, cultural exchanges, and humanitarian assistance. “PM Modi’s visit aims to further consolidate and expand India-Ukraine relations,” the MEA revealed.
