Chief Justice of India (CJI) D Y Chandrachud underscored the critical role of the district judiciary as the 'backbone of the judiciary' in upholding the rule of law at the National Conference of the District Judiciary on Saturday. He urged an end to the term 'subordinate judiciary.'
The CJI also highlighted the mental health challenges faced by judges due to their professional realities and called for attention to this often overlooked issue. Notably, an increasing number of women have joined the district judiciary in recent years, signifying a promising shift towards a more diverse judiciary.
Justice Chandrachud lauded the digitization efforts in the legal system, including the scanning of millions of court records and the establishment of e-sewa kendras. He stressed that technology should aid in making courts more citizen-centric, ensuring that no person is left behind. The conference, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saw participation from several prominent legal figures.
