Biden Administration Enforces Steep Tariffs on Chinese Imports
The Biden administration has imposed significant tariff hikes on Chinese imports, including a 100% duty on electric vehicles and other strategic goods, aiming to protect U.S. industries. Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are leveraging these actions in their political campaigns. China has vowed retaliation against these measures.
The Biden administration on Friday confirmed substantial tariff increases on Chinese imports, imposing a 100% duty on electric vehicles to safeguard crucial U.S. industries from China's state-driven overproduction. The U.S. Trade Representative announced that tariffs on solar cells, steel, aluminum, and EV batteries, ranging from 25% to 50%, will take effect on Sept. 27.
The USTR's decision, initially examined by Reuters, also includes a 50% duty on Chinese semiconductors and new categories such as polysilicon and silicon wafers, starting in 2025. Despite auto industry objections, President Joe Biden maintained high tariffs on essential minerals like graphite and lithium-ion batteries for EV production.
Top White House economic adviser Lael Brainard emphasized the necessity of 'tough, targeted' tariffs to counteract China's subsidies and technological policies. China has pledged retaliation, dismissing U.S. accusations and attributing its EV industry's success to innovation rather than government aid.
