In a shocking incident on New Year's Day in New Orleans' famed French Quarter, a driver crashed his pickup truck into a crowd and opened fire, leaving 10 dead and more than 35 injured in what authorities are investigating as a potential act of terrorism.
Early on Wednesday morning, the suspect reportedly attempted to run over as many people as possible on the intersection of Canal and Bourbon Streets before a shootout with police resulted in his death. Over 300 officers were on duty due to the city's hosting of major events, including the Sugar Bowl.
New Orleans officials, including Mayor LaToya Cantrell and Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick, have condemned the attack. The FBI is pursuing all leads, including the possibility of a suspected improvised explosive device, to determine whether this was an act of terrorism.
