In a recent development that has raised concerns about national security, a Swedish diplomat has been taken into custody on suspicion of espionage, as reported by Swedish public television SVT. The Swedish security service SAPO confirmed the detention following an operation in the Stockholm region.
Karin Lutz, spokesperson for SAPO, stated that they have a case under the suspicion of spying, with one person currently held in custody. According to SVT, the suspect has experience posted at several embassies globally, and the matter is now in the hands of the national security unit within the Swedish Prosecution Authority.
Justice Minister Gunnar Strommer informed media outlets that the government is aware of the situation, describing the suspicion level as 'reasonable grounds', the lesser of two legal classifications in Sweden for such cases. Anton Strand, the defense lawyer for the detainee, chose not to make a statement. This incident aligns with Swedish authorities' recent concerns regarding increasing espionage threats from foreign entities, including Russia and China, as highlighted by SAPO's warning earlier this year.
