El Salvador's President Under Fire for Alleged Migrant Mistreatment

El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele faces an investigation for alleged mistreatment and human rights violations against Venezuelan migrants. The probe, initiated by Venezuelan authorities, also includes El Salvador's Justice Minister and prison system head. Detained migrants were released in a diplomatic exchange involving the U.S. and Venezuela.

El Salvador's President, Nayib Bukele, is at the center of a probe concerning alleged mistreatment and human rights violations of Venezuelan migrants detained in the country. The migrants were held in a maximum-security prison after deportation from the United States.

Venezuelan Attorney General Tarek William Saab announced the investigation following reports from migrants about their treatment. The probe extends to El Salvador's Justice Minister, Gustavo Villatoro, and Osiris Luna, head of the prison system.

Over 250 migrants were detained since March in the Terrorism Confinement Center. They were released as part of a diplomatic exchange between El Salvador, the U.S., and Venezuela. Bukele's office did not respond to requests for comment on the matter.
