Rare Arrest of Indian Nationals at US Border
Two Indian nationals were arrested for crossing the US border illegally near Maine, a rare occurrence as only 15 such cases have been recorded in the area over three years. They face prosecution and removal. CBP introduces a voluntary departure app offering incentives for illegal entrants to leave.
Last week, two Indian nationals were apprehended by US authorities for illegally entering the United States near the northeastern state of Maine, according to border officials.
The arrests were made by Houlton Sector Border Patrol agents after the pair illegally crossed the international boundary on foot. The US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) noted the rarity of such arrests, as only 15 Indian nationals have been encountered in the area over the last three fiscal years.
The individuals will be prosecuted and placed into removal proceedings. Despite record low numbers of illegal crossings, some still attempt to breach US laws, stated Houlton Sector Acting Chief Patrol Agent Craig Shepley. CBP is now promoting a voluntary return process via the CBP Home app, offering a USD 1,000 stipend to eligible participants who choose to depart and confirm their departure through the app.
