The Supreme Court will address a petition challenging the detention of Sonam Wangchuk, a prominent climate activist, under the National Security Act on Monday. Filed by his wife, Gitanjali J Angmo, the plea questions the legality of his detention and demands his immediate release.
Detained on September 26 in Jodhpur jail, Wangchuk was held under the NSA amid protests for Ladakh's statehood and Sixth Schedule status, resulting in casualties. Angmo's petition, supported by senior lawyer Vivek Tankha, criticizes the detention's constitutionality, highlighting its inconsistency with articles 14, 19, 21, and 22.
The petition calls for Wangchuk's production in court and challenges the Ladakh administration's decision. It describes his detention as an attempt to suppress his peaceful activism, evoking distress in Ladakh, and illustrating the psychological toll on its people.
