Assault Attempt on Chief Justice: A Grave Insult to Democracy

Nationalist Congress Party president Sharad Pawar, on Monday, expressed strong condemnation of the alleged attempt to attack Chief Justice of India BR Gavai during court proceedings. Pawar described the incident as not only an assault on the judiciary but a grave insult to the Constitution as well.

In his statement, the former Union minister emphasized the judiciary's vital role in upholding democratic values and ensuring debates and disagreements are resolved fairly and justly. The judiciary's purpose, he argued, is to safeguard democracy and the Constitution.

The incident involved 71-year-old lawyer Rakesh Kishor, who allegedly attempted to throw a shoe at CJI Gavai during a courtroom session. This act raises red flags about the growing tendency to undermine constitutional institutions, warned Rajya Sabha MP Pawar, urging the nation to heed this warning.
