In a display of dissent, Sri Lanka's opposition party Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) donned black in Parliament on Thursday, protesting what they perceived as an insensitive response from the government regarding the assassination of one of their local council leaders.
Lasantha Wickramasekera, who was at the helm of the Weligama local authority in Matara district, was tragically shot on Tuesday. This marks the first political assassination since the current National People's Power (NPP) government assumed power a year prior.
Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala addressed Parliament, noting Wickramasekera's criminal history and ties to the underworld, which prompted backlash from opposition members accusing him of defaming the killed leader. Challenges have been issued for government accountability and capturing the responsible assailant.
