MI5 Alerts MPs: Chinese Espionage Threat Surfaces
MI5 has alerted UK parliament members about Chinese agents attempting to collect information and influence activities. The warning follows a dropped case against men accused of spying for China. Officials stress vigilance against Chinese Ministry of State Security's use of digital platforms for espionage.
On Tuesday, MI5 issued a stringent warning to UK parliamentarians about Chinese agents targeting them for information collection and influence activities. The security service's warning, communicated via an email obtained by Reuters, highlights ongoing concerns about Chinese espionage efforts in the UK.
The warning arose after the recent collapse of a trial involving two Britons accused of spying for China. The trial failed to proceed due to insufficient evidence linking China to a national security threat. Despite the setback, UK officials remain on high alert, urging vigilance against covert operations by the Chinese Ministry of State Security.
Speaker Lindsay Hoyle emphasized the broad scope of the Chinese espionage efforts. According to Hoyle, agents employed a range of tactics, including reaching out through professional platforms like LinkedIn. Meanwhile, the Chinese embassy in London has yet to comment on these allegations.
