Jeanine Pirro, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, announced on Friday a significant development in the case of a man accused of shooting two National Guard members. Charges have been elevated to first-degree murder following the death of one of the soldiers involved.
The tragic incident resulted in the death of Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, aged 20, who had been hospitalized in critical condition alongside Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, 24, after the Wednesday afternoon shooting. Beckstrom's death was confirmed Thursday evening by President Donald Trump.
The suspect, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, initially faced charges of assault with intent to kill while armed and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence. Pirro indicated that with Beckstrom's death, Lakanwal now faces upgraded charges to first-degree murder, as the attack was described as 'ambush-style' using a .357 Smith & Wesson revolver.
