The Indian government has decided to engage with public and industry stakeholders regarding the draft Broadcasting Services (Regulation) Bill-2023. Union Minister L Murugan informed Rajya Sabha that suggestions on the Bill, aimed at regulating both digital and traditional broadcasters, are under consideration.
The proposed legislation has stirred concern due to its strict regulatory measures, which could extend censorship powers and impose heavy compliance on smaller digital creators. Initially introduced to the public in November 2023, the consultation period for feedback has been extended to October 2024 based on wide-ranging responses.
While the Information and Broadcasting Ministry, led by Ashwini Vaishnaw, placed the draft on hold last year for further deliberation, government officials stress the importance of comprehensive dialogue before moving forward with the proposed framework.
