Mystery Shells Target Syria's Strategic Mezzah Airport
Shells of unknown origin targeted Syria's Mezzah military airport in Damascus, with no casualties reported. Four missile launchers were found, but the perpetrators remain unidentified. While Reuters indicated U.S. plans for a military presence to aid a security pact between Syria and Israel, Syrian officials deny this claim.
The state-run Al Ekhbariya TV revealed that shells of unidentified origin landed near the Mezzah military airport in Syria's capital, Damascus, on Tuesday. No casualties or material damage were reported, as stated by Syria's state news agency, SANA.
SANA added that four missile launchers had been discovered but could not confirm the party responsible or pinpoint the launchers' exact locations. Earlier, the sound of an explosion was heard in Damascus, which is currently under investigation.
Reuters reported in November the U.S.'s intention to establish a military base in Damascus to serve a security pact between Syria and Israel. The airport could potentially be part of a truce zone. However, a Syrian foreign ministry source dismissed Reuters' claims as "false."
