Four armed individuals crossing from Afghanistan into Tajikistan were fatally shot by Tajik border guards, according to Tajikistan's National Security Committee. The overnight encounter is the second such violent incident along the shared border since November.
Tajik authorities reported the gunmen were near a border village in Afghanistan's Badakhshan province and refused to surrender when confronted, leading to their deaths. The border committee referred to the attackers as members of a terrorist group, but provided no further identification.
Afghan officials, however, labelled the deceased as smugglers, with government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid noting ongoing border issues involving smugglers and efforts by the Taliban-led administration to address these challenges. The dispute surfaces on the heels of a recent cross-border attack and is part of historically strained relations, although recent conciliatory gestures signal a possible easing of tensions.
