In a landmark case, Captain Vladimir Motin was sentenced to six years in prison for causing a fatal collision at sea. His negligence resulted in the presumed death of Solong crew member Mark Pernia. The incident occurred when the Portuguese-flagged Solong struck the anchored Stena Immaculate tanker.
Motin, a Russian national, was at the helm of the container ship when the tragic accident unfolded. The collision was deemed a result of gross negligence, leading to the death of 38-year-old Mark Pernia, whose body was never recovered.
Following a trial at London's Old Bailey court, Judge Andrew Baker highlighted the severity of the negligence, stating that Pernia died under Motin's command. The captain was subsequently convicted and handed his sentence.
