President Donald Trump has openly criticized Maryland Governor Wes Moore regarding a significant sewage spill that is affecting the Potomac River. Despite the fact that the broken pipeline, the Potomac Interceptor, is under the jurisdiction of the District of Columbia-based water authority and federal oversight, Trump has insisted that Moore's administration is responsible for an inadequate response. Trump took to social media, condemning what he calls 'incompetent Local Leadership' for allowing the situation to worsen.
The pipeline's collapse, which spans back to the 1960s, resulted in millions of gallons of wastewater spilling into the river. Trump announced plans for federal intervention, citing Moore's lagging coordination efforts. Nevertheless, spokesperson Ammar Moussa defended Moore, pointing out that federal participation has been lacking in cleanup discussions. They criticized the Trump administration for avoiding responsibility and inaccurately assigning blame to the Maryland governor.
Tensions between Trump and Moore have remained heated, with Trump continuously excluding Moore, a potential future presidential candidate, from prominent events. Beyond environmental issues, their disputes extend to criticism over violence in Baltimore and infrastructure challenges, notably the reconstruction of Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge. Trump's recent attacks are seen as part of the ongoing partisan clash, with both sides steadfast in their accusations.
